Wayfarers Arcade, a historic landmark in Southport, Merseyside, is celebrating its 125th anniversary with a weekend of iconic music-hall-style celebrations. The Grade II listed structure, located on Lord Street, has been a popular destination for shoppers for well over a century, and its rich Victorian history and architectural features have made it a beloved institution.
Originally designed by architect G.E. Bolshaw and opened on October 1, 1898, the arcade has undergone several name changes over the years. It was first called the Leyland Arcade, named after Southport’s MP at the time, Sir Herbert Leyland. It was later renamed the Burton Arcade and then Wayfarers Arcade. Throughout its long history, the arcade has seen many famous faces and held numerous events, even serving as a filming location for ITV’s Coronation Street.
Yvonne Burns, who worked as the center manager for Wayfarers Arcade from 1999 until her recent retirement, shared her memories of the iconic building. She reminisced about visiting the arcade as a child in the 70s and frequenting shops like Sandpiper and Wayfarers Arts. Yvonne also highlighted the arcade’s Christmas decorations as her favorite time of the year, saying that it was when the arcade truly sparkled.
Over the years, the arcade has changed owners multiple times, but many of its original features have been preserved and restored. Recent renovations have included restoring the lighting, replacing the floor, and repairing the roof. Yvonne mentioned how the previous owners were passionate about maintaining the building’s historic charm.
Wayfarers Arcade has become more than just a shopping destination. It has fostered a sense of community with its independent businesses and loyal customers. Yvonne described it as a little village where everyone knows each other and has formed lasting friendships. Despite retiring, Yvonne continues to support the arcade by shopping there.
To celebrate its 125th anniversary, Wayfarers Arcade is hosting a weekend of free music-hall-style celebrations. The event will feature performers from the highly skilled Gambolling Arena company, who will take visitors on an entertaining journey of melodrama and fun. With music hall singers charming shoppers as they visit the various shops, the arcade aims to recreate the joy and nostalgia of the good old days.
Wayfarers Arcade holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Southport. Its timeless beauty, original features, and rich history make it one of the most iconic buildings in the area. Celebrating its 125th anniversary is not only a momentous occasion but also an opportunity to appreciate the dedication of those who have preserved and cherished this historic landmark for generations to come.
