Washington State University Volleyball Faces Uncertainty Amid Conference Realignment

Washington State University’s volleyball program is facing a period of uncertainty due to conference realignment. The school, along with Oregon State, Cal, and Stanford, is looking for a new conference after eight Pac-12 schools decided to move to Midwest-based conferences. This news has left WSU’s volleyball team unsure of its future, but coach Jen Greeny is keeping her focus on the positive aspects.

Despite the uncertainty, Washington State University’s volleyball team is currently in a great position. With a talented and experienced roster, a No. 21 ranking, and a projected second-place finish in the Pac-12, the team is enjoying success. Coach Greeny has led the Cougars to seven consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances and wants her team to concentrate on their own performance rather than the conference realignment.

When the news broke that Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah would be joining the Big 12 in 2024-25, Greeny and her players were initially unaware as they were on a team retreat. Greeny expressed sadness about the conference realignment, citing the long-standing tradition of the Pac-12. She believes that apart from football, no other sport desires this change, especially considering the logistical challenges and missed school time for student-athletes.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the conference, Coach Greeny reassured her team that Washington State University volleyball is in a strong position. The program recently raised $800,000 for renovations in Bohler Gym, including a state-of-the-art court, new bleachers, and additional seating. The facility now meets the requirements to host NCAA Tournament regionals and offers an enhanced experience for both players and fans.

The team’s success is also reflected in its talented roster. With almost all players returning from last year’s 23-win squad, the Cougars have a strong foundation. Middle blocker Magda Jehlářová is already a three-time All-American, and outside hitter Pia Timmer is a three-time All-Pac-12 selection. Alongside them, Arizona State transfer Iman Isanovic has been named a preseason first-team All-Pac-12 pick.

Coach Greeny praises Isanovic, who joined the team in January, for her impressive performance. Additionally, the team welcomes the return of middle blockers Shea Rubright and Jasmine Martin, who have recovered from torn ACLs. Grad transfer Lana Radakovic from UC Davis will also compete for playing time.

With a mature and experienced team, Washington State University volleyball is well-prepared to handle the pressures of the upcoming season. The team consists of fifth-year/grad students, seniors, redshirt juniors, and juniors, offering a wealth of experience. The roster also includes international players, with the team benefitting from a European Tour this summer, fostering both volleyball skills and team bonding.

In terms of conference rankings, No. 3 Stanford is heavily favored to win the Pac-12, while Washington State was picked to finish second. The team aims to surpass expectations and achieve big-time success.

Despite the uncertainty caused by conference realignment, Washington State University volleyball remains steadfast in its commitment to success. Coach Greeny and her team are focused on their own performance and maintain confidence as they embark on the upcoming season. With a talented and experienced roster, renovated facilities, and a hunger for victory, the Cougars are ready to face any challenges that come their way.
