Fans of the upcoming Barbie film have been caught up in a new viral trend known as the Barbie Foot Challenge. Inspired by a teaser for the Greta Gerwig-directed movie, which showed lead actress Margot Robbie stepping out of high heels with a perfectly arched foot, fans attempted to recreate the iconic pose. However, doctors are now warning enthusiasts about the potential risks involved in the trend.

The Barbie Foot Challenge gained popularity after a TikTok user named Shanna Scribner posted a video executing the arched foot pose. The challenge has since garnered over 200,000 views on the video-sharing platform. Despite its online popularity, healthcare professionals are urging caution.

Dr. Jodi R. Schoenhaus, a Board Certified Podiatrist at Foot, Ankle & Leg Vein Center, explains that while the Barbie foot pose may make legs appear longer and toned, it is not without risks. The pose involves keeping the feet pointed and arched without the support of high heels, which can lead to instability and potential injuries. Dr. Schoenhaus warns that repeated attempts at the pose over long periods of time can result in ligament sprains, muscle and spine problems, and potential harm to growth plates in young girls.

Contrary to popular belief, Barbie actually has flat feet, much like 30 percent of the population. Dr. Schoenhaus advises that the fad should remain with movie stars who have props and multiple takes to perfect the pose, rather than being attempted by the general public. In comparison to wearing high heels, which provide some support to the heel and rearfoot, the Barbie foot pose lacks any supportive structure, placing additional strain on the body.

Despite the warnings, interest in the trend continues to rise. Foot, Ankle & Leg Vein Center reports that Google search demand for Barbie Feet has increased by nearly 100 percent in the past week alone. While fans may be inspired by Margot Robbie’s embodiment of the iconic doll, healthcare professionals advise against attempting the pose and recommend enjoying the new Barbie movie, set to premiere in theaters on July 21, from a more relaxed position.

As individuals engage with trends inspired by popular culture, it is important to consider expert advice and prioritize personal health and safety. The Barbie Foot Challenge may be entertaining, but it is crucial to recognize and avoid the potential risks associated with emulating an iconic pose without proper training or supportive footwear. Let the professionals worry about achieving the perfect Barbie arch, and instead, sit back, relax, and enjoy the magic of the film.
