JASHORE, BANGLADESH – In a heartwarming incident, a woman with mental disabilities, who was discovered lost and alone, gave birth to a baby girl at the upazila health complex in Jashore’s Chougacha on Tuesday. The woman, whose identity remains unknown, had been found wandering through the markets in the area before she was brought to the health complex on 18 November.

Chougacha Upazila Nirbahi Officer Irufa Sultana, touched by the woman’s situation, visited the health complex following the baby’s natural birth. She generously provided new clothes for the newborn, a bed with a mosquito net, and a warm blanket for the mother. Spending about half an hour there, the UNO enquired about the woman’s condition and treatment and instructed the hospital authorities to take strict measures to ensure the safety of the child.

Dr Lutfunnahar, the upazila health and family planning officer, shared that the woman had been seen wandering through various markets in the upazila for some time. The UNO informed me about this situation after being alerted by locals in Garibpur village of Sinhajhuli union. Subsequently, on Saturday evening, the woman was admitted to the upazila health complex, Dr Lutfunnahar added.

Speaking about the matter, UNO Irufa Sultana expressed her concern, suspecting that the woman might have lost her family and arrived in the area due to her mental illness. We are trying to trace her family with the help of the Police Bureau of Investigation, she said. In an appeal for information, Sultana urged anyone who has any knowledge about the woman or her family to contact the UNO’s office or the Chougacha AC land authorities.

The heartwarming story of the mentally-disabled woman giving birth has gained attention and concern from the local community. With hopes of bringing peace and stability to the woman’s life, efforts are being made to find her family and provide necessary support for her and her newborn daughter.
