VMware has announced its plans to enable generative AI across its multi-cloud stack, drawing on resources from various cloud platforms. The company’s president, Sumit Dhawan, outlined the strategy during a recent video event, emphasizing the importance of efficiently running large language models in a VMware environment and enabling quick implementation of the technology. The core principle behind VMware’s approach is to ensure consistent policy application to resources across multiple clouds, allowing secure use of data from various sources in an AI model.

Vittorio Viarengo, VP for Cross-Cloud Services, highlighted VMware’s goal of providing customers with the ability to choose where their data comes from across different clouds and where their models and applications run, all while maintaining enterprise-grade control and privacy. Sujata Banerjee, VP of research, mentioned two key objectives: optimizing the efficiency of running AI workloads on cloud infrastructure and leveraging AI and machine learning to enhance the scalability and automation capabilities of the infrastructure itself.

Another topic of discussion in the video was the possibility of using off-premises accelerators to process on-premises data. While this may result in slower processing, it eliminates the need to move data, thus offering certain benefits. Additionally, VMware intends to enable ecosystem partners to quickly implement their solutions within the VMware platform, catering to enterprise needs.

Dhawan indicated that customers would soon experience this new technology firsthand, with many getting the opportunity within a few weeks. This timeframe coincides with VMware’s upcoming event, Explore, scheduled for August 21st. The event typically serves as a platform for VMware to unveil major news and strategy updates.

While VMware gears up for its annual event, a significant moment in the company’s history appears imminent. The European Commission is expected to greenlight Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware. However, the EC had expressed concerns regarding Broadcom’s potential use of VMware ownership to impede rival networking hardware manufacturers. Broadcom seemingly assuaged these concerns and gained regulatory approval for the acquisition, marking a significant milestone for the company.

As VMware prepares to revolutionize generative AI capabilities and unveils its latest advancements at Explore, the industry eagerly anticipates the synergy that will emerge between VMware, its partners, and the broader AI ecosystem.
