Virtual reality simulations have been found to help people with autism navigate real-world tasks, according to a study conducted by researchers at the University of Missouri. The study, in collaboration with the University of Georgia and the University of Cincinnati, focused on providing autistic individuals with virtual training opportunities to practice using public transportation. Using artificial intelligence techniques, the research team discovered that individuals with autism often perceive their environment differently from their neurotypical peers, experiencing sensory processing challenges in overstimulating environments. By identifying distracting objects and reducing stimuli in a safe virtual environment, individuals with autism can gain confidence and improve their community engagement in real-life situations. The study opens up possibilities for future research on the effectiveness of virtual reality simulations as a tool for enhancing the lives of individuals with autism. The findings are published in the journal Computers & Education: X Reality.
