Virginia Tech suffered a heartbreaking loss to Purdue in a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback. The Hokies rallied from a three-score deficit by consistently getting Purdue’s offense off the field on third down. However, the Boilermakers were able to convert in the fourth quarter, leading to two decisive drives that ultimately secured their 24-17 victory.

The game, which began Saturday afternoon, was marred by a lengthy weather delay that extended into the evening hours. Despite the delay, Purdue prevented Virginia Tech from claiming its first home win over a nonconference opponent since 2009. The Boilermakers executed a methodical attack on a crucial drive early in the fourth quarter, sealing their win.

With only 2:30 left on the clock and 91 yards to go for a tying touchdown, Virginia Tech still had a chance. Quarterback Grant Wells, who had taken every snap on the first 12 drives, was replaced by backup Kyron Drones on the 13th drive in an attempt to provide a spark. Drones immediately made an impact with a 26-yard completion to Dae’Quan Wright, followed by a 13-yard run that took the Hokies into Purdue territory.

However, the Boilermakers’ defense proved too strong, forcing four straight incomplete passes to regain possession. Purdue’s Devin Mockobee delivered a crucial 20-yard run to pick up a first down, allowing the team to run out the clock and secure their road triumph.

Purdue’s game-winning drive showcased their ability to systematically break down Virginia Tech’s defense. Quarterback Hudson Card converted on two third-down situations with runs of 12 and 5 yards, respectively. Mockobee also played a pivotal role, catching a 12-yard pass from Card on a third-and-11 play, ultimately setting up Card’s touchdown run that gave Purdue a seven-point lead with only eight minutes remaining.

The Boilermakers had initially taken a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. However, the game was then delayed due to inclement weather. After the delay, Purdue quickly added 10 points to extend their lead to 17-0. Yet, Virginia Tech responded with a remarkable comeback in the final six minutes of the first half, scoring 17 points to tie the game at halftime.

While Virginia Tech put up a valiant effort in the end, it wasn’t enough to overcome Purdue’s resilient play. Wells recorded 243 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions, but the Hokies struggled greatly in the rushing department, finishing with a mere 11 yards.

Despite the disappointing loss, Virginia Tech will look to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming games, aiming to secure victories and learn from the mistakes made against Purdue.
