Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney and other Virginia Democrats are calling for increased funding to address the issue of gun violence in the city. They gathered at the Bell Tower in Capitol Square to urge legislators to invest an additional $30 million in certain gun violence prevention initiatives.
Since declaring gun violence a public health crisis in 2021, Stoney expressed concern over the increasing number of families losing their lives to senseless acts of gun violence. He emphasized the urgent need for more funding to support efforts in addressing this crisis.
Currently, Richmond is working with a little over $2.5 million to combat violence, which Stoney believes is insufficient. He called on Governor Glenn Youngkin and state leaders to provide more funding to effectively respond to the ongoing issue.
Stoney credited the existing initiatives for a 22% decrease in non-fatal shootings in Richmond, but believes that additional funding would further reduce gun violence. The proposed funds would be allocated towards strengthening outreach programs, enhancing healthcare support services, and providing additional programs for high-risk residents.
The mayor stressed the importance of taking a comprehensive approach to tackle the root causes of crime and urged the General Assembly and Governor to work together to pass a budget that would build on the progress made so far.
Budget negotiations resumed recently and remain ongoing. The call for increased funding reflects the urgent need to allocate resources to combat gun violence and create a safer environment for the residents of Richmond.
By emphasizing the significance of adequate funding and collaboration between various stakeholders, the Democrats aim to address the pressing issue of gun violence in the city and make progress towards ensuring the safety and well-being of all residents.
