Vigilante Faces Sentencing for Fatal Motorcyclist Chase in Townsville Court

A sentencing date has been set for Christopher Michael Hughes, an alleged vigilante who is accused of killing Jennifer Board, a 22-year-old aspiring police officer, during a fatal motorcyclist chase in Townsville. Hughes, now 28, is charged with manslaughter.

The tragic incident occurred in February 2021 when Ms. Board’s motorcycle was struck by a car that had veered onto the wrong side of Riverway Drive. Police allege that Christopher Michael Hughes, then 26, was driving the car and had been chasing a stolen vehicle driven by 20-year-old Gregory Clubb on Ross River Road.

In a recent court appearance at the Townsville Supreme Court, Mr. Hughes’ case was adjourned for sentencing, which is scheduled for November 3. He has not entered a plea, but it is expected that he will do so at his next appearance.

Originally, Hughes was charged with murder by the police, but the charge was downgraded to manslaughter on February 3 in the Townsville Supreme Court. The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions explained that the decision to downgrade the charge was based on a review of all the evidence presented at the committal proceeding.

During a previous court hearing, it was revealed that Hughes was allegedly traveling at a speed of 180 kilometers per hour before the fatal crash. He has been in custody since the collision and had a bail application refused in December 2021.

Crown prosecutor Joshua Francis shed light on Mr. Hughes’ alleged behavior on the night of the incident. It was stated that when assessed by a paramedic at the scene, Hughes showed a willingness to obstruct the course of justice by lying about his speed and the purpose of his driving. He also instructed another person to remove dashcam footage, return it to his home, and subsequently destroy the memory card.

As this case proceeds, the Townsville Court will determine the appropriate sentencing for Christopher Michael Hughes. The tragic loss of Jennifer Board has left her family, friends, and the community devastated. The court’s decision will bring some closure to this heartbreaking chapter and, hopefully, serve as a reminder of the importance of responsible and lawful behavior on the roads.

It is important to note that any criminal proceedings should be approached with the principles of innocent until proven guilty. As more details emerge and the case unfolds, a clearer understanding of the events leading to this tragic incident will hopefully be achieved.
