Police in Victoria, Australia have agreed to implement nine-hour shifts over a nine-day fortnight, following negotiations with the police union and the state government. The decision aims to prevent further industrial action over the Christmas period, although concerns have been raised about the potential impact on community safety.

The Police Association Victoria announced yesterday that it had reached a deal with force command to suspend its industrial action campaign and postpone talks on a new enterprise bargaining agreement until May of next year. As part of the agreement, Victoria Police has committed to developing and implementing a nine-hour shift model.

Currently, patrol officers are required to arrive at work an hour early to complete handovers, prepare equipment, and hit the streets. This means they are already effectively working nine-hour shifts but not receiving payment for the additional hour. Adopting a nine-day fortnight would not only compensate officers for their extra time but also provide them with an extra day off.

The union has hailed the agreement as a breakthrough, with the expectation that it will alleviate some of the frustrations and concerns among police officers. However, not everyone is convinced that shifting to this work schedule is without its drawbacks.

Critics argue that the community may be put at risk as a result of the implementation of the nine-hour shift model. With longer shifts and fewer days off, officers could face increased fatigue, potentially impacting their ability to perform their duties optimally. There are concerns that exhausted officers may be more prone to errors, compromised decision-making, and decreased vigilance while on duty.

Despite these reservations, the decision to avoid further industrial action during the festive season has been deemed a priority. The union’s decision to suspend its campaign reflects the understanding that community safety cannot be compromised indefinitely. By deferring negotiations until next year, all parties hope to find a more permanent resolution that considers both officer welfare and community protection.

Victoria Police and the union will now work together to develop the proposed nine-hour shift model, taking into account the concerns raised by critics. It is crucial that the final shift arrangement strikes a balance between supporting the wellbeing of police officers and maintaining the necessary level of public safety.

As discussions continue, it remains to be seen how the implementation of the nine-hour shift model will unfold and what impact it will have on policing operations and community safety. The upcoming months will be pivotal in determining the effectiveness and sustainability of this new work arrangement for Victoria Police officers.
