The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Perambur, Chennai, is set to introduce a sleeper version of the Vande Bharat Express in February-March 2024. According to KN Babu, Chief Mechanical Engineer (Technical Coordination) at ICF, the first sleeper version of the Vande Bharat (VB) train will be launched by the end of February or the first week of March next year.
The initial sleeper version of the VB will be manufactured in addition to the 10 sleeper version trains that ICF plans to produce in collaboration with BEML Limited. BEML has already secured an order worth Rs 675 crore for this purpose. The ICF aims to produce a total of 77 VB trains, including both chair car and sleeper versions, during the current financial year.
Apart from the 10 sleeper version trains, the ICF will also manufacture another 80 sleeper version VB trains through a consortium consisting of BHEL and Titagarh Wagons. Additionally, TMH and RVNL consortium will produce another 120 trains. The sleeper version of the VB will comprise one AC first class, four AC tier-II, and 11 AC tier-III coaches, replacing the long-distance Rajdhani Express trains.
In addition, the ICF is developing Vande Bharat ‘Metro’ trains to replace Mainline Electrical Multiple Units (MEMUs) operating between cities. The VB Metro will consist of eight cars with power systems similar to the existing VB chair car trains. The seating arrangement of the fully air-conditioned VB Metro will be slightly different. It is worth mentioning that the VB Metro will run on broad gauge, unlike the imported or domestically assembled Metro Rail trains that operate on standard gauge. With a journey time of three to four hours and a distance coverage of 150 to 200 km between cities, the ‘Metro’ version will offer ample standing space. It will also feature all the amenities of the VB chair car, excluding the pantry which is unnecessary for short-distance travel.
The VB Metro will boast high acceleration and deceleration capabilities, enabling frequent stops. Additionally, it will help boost track capacity as the quick acceleration and deceleration will facilitate faster train movement, creating the potential for additional trains. The ICF has also partnered with Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation to produce Vande Suburban trains. These suburban trains will have all the features of the existing VB, with the exception of toilet facilities. The Vande Suburban, designed for the suburban segment, will have a wider body and automatic sliding doors similar to the VB.
The ICF’s efforts to introduce new versions of the Vande Bharat Express reflect its commitment to advancing India’s railway system with improved and modernized trains. The sleeper version will cater to overnight and long-distance travel, offering passengers a comfortable and luxurious journey. Similarly, the VB Metro and Vande Suburban will enhance intra-city and suburban travel experiences with their superior features and capabilities.
