Uttarakhand State Wildlife Board (SWB) has decided to increase the compensation amount for families affected by human-animal conflict in the region. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami made the announcement during the 19th SWB meeting, stating that the compensation would be raised from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 6 lakh. The proposal will soon be presented in a cabinet meeting for approval.

CM Dhami emphasized the importance of implementing measures such as solar lights, awareness campaigns, and increased forest staff deployment in areas close to forests. He directed the authorities to identify the regions with the highest incidents of human-animal conflict to issue prior warnings to the locals.

During the meeting, it was revealed that a Human Wildlife Conflict Prevention Cell and a Uttarakhand Human Wildlife Conflict Prevention Fund have been established. Additionally, an Uttarakhand Wildlife Helpline has been set up as part of the cell’s initiatives. Furthermore, a revised proposal for the Human-Wildlife Conflict Relief Distribution Fund Rules has been drafted to include provisions for ex gratia in cases of death caused by wasp or bee attacks. To protect agricultural produce from animal damage, the authorities have planned to intensify bio-fencing work in higher and hilly areas.

Concerns were raised regarding monkeys and wild boars posing a significant threat to crops. CM Dhami emphasized the need to address this issue effectively. Furthermore, he announced the forthcoming establishment of the long-awaited Tiger Protection Force in Uttarakhand and prioritized raising public awareness about wildlife conservation. The CM also called for regular discussions on eco-tourism, wildlife tourism, and bio-fencing.

CM Dhami stressed the importance of promptly completing the development of Chaurasi Kutiya as an international tourist destination. He emphasized that offices would be held accountable for ensuring timely progress. The CM also mentioned the recent amendment to The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, brought in on the instructions of the Prime Minister, which encompasses several provisions benefiting Uttarakhand.

The state government aims to strike a balance between wildlife conservation and human interests, taking into account the challenges posed by human-animal conflict. Uttarakhand’s efforts to increase compensation for affected families and allocate funds for prevention and relief are steps towards addressing the complex issue. By enhancing measures such as bio-fencing and establishing the Tiger Protection Force, the authorities intend to mitigate conflicts and protect the region’s wildlife.
