The Uttarakhand Chief Minister, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has announced that his government will strictly investigate and take action against cases of love jihad. Dhami stated that a high-level meeting, which he will be chairing, will be held with the Director General of Police and other officials to discuss the issue. His statement comes after tensions rose in Uttarkashi town last month over an alleged abduction attempt on a 14-year-old girl by two men, one of whom was from the minority community. The men were subsequently arrested.
This move follows similar statements by other BJP politicians, such as MP Sadhvi Pragya, who claimed that Muslim boys were tricking Hindu girls into relationships, and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, who also declared that strict action would be taken against individuals involved in love jihad, religious conversion, and the promotion of terrorist activities.
In a similar vein, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath referred to love jihad as an agenda of undeclared terrorism against humanity. He made these comments after watching the special screening of ‘The Kerala Story,’ a movie that stirred up controversy across the country.
Given the recent spate of allegations and arrests related to love jihad, many have criticized the term as being divisive and politically motivated. The term is used to describe a supposed conspiracy by Muslim men to entice Hindu women into marriage and conversion to Islam. Critics argue that it is an attempt to demonize the Muslim community and stoke Hindu nationalism in India.
The issue of love jihad has been a controversial topic for several years in India.
