UTS Launches Robotics Institute, Advancing Innovation & Research in Robotics

In a groundbreaking move, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS) has officially launched the Robotics Institute, a state-of-the-art research center dedicated to the advancement of robotics research and innovation. Led by esteemed robotics and mechatronics expert Professor Sarath Kodagoda, this cutting-edge institute brings together over 80 researchers who are committed to developing customized robotics solutions for various industries, including infrastructure, agriculture, health, manufacturing, and defense.

The launch of the Robotics Institute represents a significant milestone for UTS, as it signifies the university’s unwavering commitment to pushing the boundaries of robotics. UTS Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Andrew Parfitt, expressed his excitement about the institute’s potential impact. He stated that UTS’s world-class capacity in robotics has not only contributed extensively to the scientific field but also revolutionized how industries can utilize the next generation of robotics.

During the launch event, several key projects were showcased, capturing the essence of the Robotics Institute’s groundbreaking endeavors. One such project highlights a pioneering robotic solution designed to maintain the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. Additionally, the institute has partnered with NBN to develop robots that support the maintenance of their vast infrastructure. Another notable collaboration involves working with Sydney Water to deploy robotic systems for assessing the condition of buried metallic water pipes and concrete sewerage pipes.

Professor Kodagoda, the driving force behind the Robotics Institute, celebrated the achievements of UTS’s Centre for Autonomous Systems, the institute’s predecessor. Through this institute, UTS has already garnered more than 70 research and industry awards through successful collaborations with various industries. Professor Kodagoda emphasized the importance of continuous research, impactful contributions, and fostering a culture of innovation and education.
