EL PASO, Texas – The University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) has announced the launch of a groundbreaking doctoral program in physics, specifically focused on quantum information sciences. With approval from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, this program aims to equip students with expertise in quantum science and computing, providing vast opportunities in a variety of industries. The program is set to begin in September 2024.
According to Mark Pederson, Ph.D., chair of the UTEP Physics Department, quantum science involves studying materials at an atomic or sub-atomic level. Quantum computing, an emerging field within quantum science, utilizes highly specialized computers to solve complex calculations that traditional computers cannot handle.

Robert Kirken, Ph.D., Dean of the College of Science at UTEP, expressed his excitement about the program’s approval and its potential to offer diverse career opportunities for students. Tunna Baruah, Ph.D., professor of physics and graduate advisor for the program, emphasized the long-term project opportunities that the Ph.D. students will have, allowing them to delve deep into their research topics and vastly expand their understanding of the field.
The UTEP Physics Department is actively recruiting new Ph.D. students for the program, which is expected to take five years to complete. Prospective applicants should possess a bachelor’s or master’s degree in physics, applied mathematics, or engineering.
