Utah’s LGBTQ+ Suicide Crisis: Urgent Need for Awareness and Support

The suicide crisis among Utah’s LGBTQ+ community has reached an alarming level, highlighting the urgent need for awareness and support. Recent statistics have revealed that Utah’s suicide rate is consistently higher than the national average, making the risk for LGBTQ+ individuals even greater. It is imperative that we address this issue and take concrete steps to prevent further tragedy.

PJ Husselbee’s story is a heartbreaking example of the pain and suffering that LGBTQ+ individuals may experience. PJ, a 20-year-old return missionary and a self-proclaimed Lord of the Rings fanatic, completed suicide before his loved ones discovered that he was gay. His secret had caused him immense pain, leading him to believe that suicide was his only escape. This devastating loss emphasizes the importance of creating a supportive environment for LGBTQ+ individuals.

In 2020, the Utah Suicide Prevention Coalition introduced the Utah LGBTQ+ Suicide Prevention Plan, which aims to reduce the rates of suicide among this vulnerable population. One crucial goal of the plan is to increase social norms that support help-seeking and recovery within the LGBTQ+ community. By promoting training on recognizing warning signs and fostering acceptance and inclusivity, we can ensure that individuals like PJ receive the support they need.

Reflecting on his brother’s untimely death, Jude Husselbee, a 28-year-old mental health professional, recognizes several red flags in PJ’s behavior and demeanor. From giving away his belongings to exhibiting extreme mood swings, there were signs that something was deeply wrong. Jude believes that if someone had been trained to recognize these warning signs, his brother might still be alive today.

It is essential for the wider public to take suicide seriously and familiarize themselves with the warning signs. By doing so, we can play a vital role in preventing future tragedies and providing much-needed support to those in need. If you or someone you know is struggling with thoughts of suicide, please reach out to the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by dialing 988. LGBTQ+ individuals can also contact the Trevor Project Suicide Hotline at 1-866-488-7386 for a listening ear.

The high suicide rates in Utah demand urgent attention and action. It is crucial for society as a whole to prioritize mental health and create an environment of compassion and understanding. By raising awareness, promoting acceptance, and providing support, we can make a significant difference in the lives of LGBTQ+ individuals across Utah. Let us work together to prevent further loss and ensure that everyone feels valued and loved for who they are.

Note: If you or anyone you know is experiencing thoughts of suicide, dial 988 for the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. If you identify as LGBTQ+ and need someone to talk to, contact the Trevor Project Suicide Hotline at 1-866-488-7386.
