Usher’s ex-wife, Tameka Foster, is taking a stand and fighting for change following the tragic death of her son in a jet ski accident on Georgia’s Lake Lanier. Foster has launched an online petition calling for the draining, cleaning, restoration, and improved safety measures for the lake.
On July 6, which marked the anniversary of her son’s fatal accident, Foster shared a screenshot of the petition on her Instagram account. In her caption, she stated, On this significant day, July 6, we remember the tragic accident on Lake Lanier that forever altered my life. Today, we honor his memory by rallying together for change.
The motivation behind Foster’s petition stems from the dark history of Lake Lanier. In the 1950s, the government flooded a significant amount of farmland, including the remains of a once-thriving Black town called Oscarville, to create the man-made lake. The acquisition of the land was marred by unfair compensation and the destruction of cemeteries and historic structures.
Due to the lake’s haunted and cursed reputation, many lives have been lost there over the years. Foster believes that improved safety measures, better zoning, and the removal of debris are necessary to prevent further tragedies. She expressed her concern about the strong currents caused by the debris at the bottom of the lake, which she believes contribute to the high number of accidents and fatalities.
Foster’s efforts aren’t solely driven by personal loss. She is also fighting for justice for her son’s death. Despite attempting to sue over the incident, she has faced obstacles due to a legal doctrine known as sovereign immunity. However, Foster remains undeterred, stating, That’s my son, and I will keep fighting.
The petition has gained more than 740 signatures so far, with a goal of reaching 1,000. Foster is determined to bring about positive change and honor her son’s memory through her advocacy. She hopes that by urging the government to invest in clearing the lake and implementing improved safety measures, the lives of future visitors can be protected.
Lake Lanier’s dark history and the tragic loss of lives call for attention and action. Foster’s petition serves as a powerful reminder of the need for justice, restoration, and enhanced safety measures to prevent further tragedies on this popular Georgia lake.
