Researchers from prestigious American universities have travelled to several jute mills in and around Kolkata as part of an international project aimed at analysing the issues affecting the productivity of the industry. The project, which is supported by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), will evaluate the mills’ output, investigate their modernisation and transformation processes, and study labour engagement, infrastructure condition, environment, heritage buildings, and land utilisation. The team members aim to identify the fundamental problems that the industry faces and the appropriate remedial measures. The recommendations will be submitted to various stakeholders, including the central and state governments and the Indian Jute Mills Association (IJMA). The project is expected to continue for a year, during which discussions will be held with mill owners, workers, and other related groups. The jute industry has been a significant player in Kolkata’s economic and social development, but it has been declining for various reasons, including limited capital, political instability, and synthetic fibres. The research project is expected to provide valuable insights into the redevelopment of the jute mills.
