Bangladesh Foreign Minister Rejects Effectiveness of US Sanctions in Promoting Democracy

In a recent statement, Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen dismissed the notion that US sanctions have successfully brought democracy to any country. During his interactions with US officials, Momen inquired about the effectiveness of using sanctions to promote democracy, to which they responded that there was no compelling evidence to suggest sanctions had achieved this outcome.

Speaking at a media briefing held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Momen expressed indifference towards the US officials’ presence, stating that it is immaterial whether they choose to come or not. Seheli Sabrin, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, also addressed the gathering.

When asked about the possibility of new sanctions on individuals in Bangladesh, Momen claimed to have no knowledge of such developments. He emphasized that the two countries engage in regular discussions on various issues, rendering the question irrelevant.

Momen revealed that President Joe Biden’s National Security Advisor, Jake Sullivan, had a productive meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina during her recent visit to Washington, D.C., following her participation in this year’s United Nations General Assembly.

The Foreign Minister vehemently denied reports that the meeting at the Bangladesh Embassy in the US capital ended abruptly. He referred to those spreading such information as liars or simply living in a delusion.

Special Request Unnecessary for Foreign Observers to Monitor Elections

Addressing concerns about the presence of foreign observers during the upcoming national election, Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen stated that Bangladesh has no intention of making a special request for their participation. However, he assured that the country would gladly welcome any observers who express an interest in monitoring the electoral process.

We do not have any desire to request specially to come, Momen declared, responding to a reporter’s query about whether Bangladesh would ask the European Union (EU) to reconsider its position. He reiterated that it would be favorable if foreign observers choose to come, but it would not affect the proceedings if they decide not to.

Momen expressed confidence in Bangladesh’s ability to conduct free and fair elections, emphasizing the country’s commitment to that goal. He extended an invitation to interested parties, stating, If anyone wants to come and see, we will welcome.

Addressing financial challenges faced by many countries, Momen acknowledged that decisions regarding observer delegations ultimately rest with the countries themselves.

The Foreign Minister also expressed the government’s desire for violence-free elections but stressed that achieving this goal requires sincere efforts from all political parties. He underlined the need to break free from a culture of election-related violence.

Bangladesh’s Election Commission is currently preparing to hold the next election in early January. The government maintains that the European Union’s decision not to dispatch a full-fledged polls-time observation team will not impact the country’s electoral process.

Notably, a joint delegation from the International Republican Institute (IRI) and National Democratic Institute (NDI) conducted a pre-election assessment mission (PEAM) from October 8 to 12. The delegation met with various stakeholders, including government officials, political party leaders, and members of civil society. Following their assessment, the PEAM will release a statement detailing key findings, an analysis of the pre-election environment, and practical recommendations to enhance the transparency and credibility of the electoral process, thereby bolstering public confidence in the elections.
