The United States is reportedly pushing for India to finalize a deal worth $2-3 billion to purchase dozens of armed drones before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s state visit to Washington on June 22. The proposed deal for the MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones from General Atomics has been derailed for years due to bureaucratic issues. The US hopes the upcoming meeting between Modi and President Joe Biden will break the log jam. The US has been focusing on deepening ties with India to counter China’s growing influence, but India’s maintenance of defense and economic ties with Russia has frustrated the US. The Quad, consisting of the US, India, Australia, and Japan, all operate or have operated the MQ-9B SeaGuardian. India has been leasing MQ-9Bs as part of an intelligence-gathering operation. The proposed deal will also include co-production of munitions and ground vehicles.
