Two United States Navy sailors have been arrested on suspicion of spying for China and selling secrets, according to the US Department of Justice. The arrest comes as a reminder of China’s aggressive efforts to undermine US democracy and threaten national security. The two suspects are accused of providing Beijing with classified information, including manuals for warships and their weapons systems, as well as blueprints for a radar system and plans for a major US military exercise.

Sailor Jinchao Wei, who served on the USS Essex in San Diego, allegedly handed over numerous documents, photos, and videos detailing the operation of ships and their systems. These included technical and mechanical manuals related to his own vessel. The 22-year-old is said to have received thousands of dollars in exchange for the information and could face a possible life sentence if convicted.

In a separate case, Petty Officer Wenheng Zhao is accused of engaging in espionage for China for almost two years from Naval Base Ventura County in California. Mr. Zhao allegedly received nearly $15,000 from a Chinese intelligence agent in exchange for information about a large-scale US military exercise in the Indo-Pacific. This included details about the timing and location of amphibious landings. He is also accused of providing electrical diagrams and blueprints for a radar system located at a US military base in southern Japan, where the United States maintains a significant military presence.

US Attorney Martin Estrada condemned the actions of the accused sailors, highlighting their betrayal of their sacred oath to protect their country. He emphasized that while the majority of US Navy personnel serve with honor, distinction, and courage, Mr. Zhao chose to corruptly sell out his colleagues and his country.

The arrests demonstrate the ongoing threat posed by China’s persistent attempts to compromise enlisted personnel and acquire sensitive military information that could seriously jeopardize US national security. The Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Counterintelligence Division was involved in the operation that led to the arrests, underscoring the commitment to counteracting foreign espionage activities.

These cases serve as a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding classified information within the US military. The government continues to prioritize efforts to identify and prevent such breaches, working in close collaboration with intelligence agencies and law enforcement to protect national security interests.

The investigation into these espionage allegations is ongoing, and it remains to be seen what further implications and consequences may arise. The arrests send a clear message about the seriousness with which the US government regards attempts to compromise its military and national security.
