Visitors to Bogota Urged to Avoid Dating Apps as Embassy Cites Online Connections in Recent Deaths

In an effort to ensure the safety of tourists in Colombia, the US embassy in Bogota has issued a warning against the use of online dating apps. This precaution comes as authorities have observed a series of suspicious deaths, some of which are believed to be connected to online liaisons.

While the recent deaths are not directly linked, the embassy acknowledged that several involve the use of online dating applications. It appears that criminals are exploiting these platforms to target unsuspecting tourists, robbing and assaulting them in public places, such as hotels and bars.

This cautionary notice from the embassy comes during a troubling surge in violent crimes against tourists across the country. The Tourism Observatory for Medellin’s District of Personnel reported a staggering 200 percent increase in thefts and violent crimes in the last trimester of 2023. Additionally, violent deaths have risen by almost a third, with US nationals primarily falling victim to robberies and even homicide at the hands of their Colombian dates.

One such tragic incident involved American comedian Tou Ger Xiong, who was lured into a trap by local women and subsequently found dead in Medellin. Criminals contacted Xiong’s friends seeking ransom, and his untimely demise serves as a haunting reminder of the dangers that can lurk behind these online encounters.

Following suit, New Zealand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Mfat) has also issued similar advice to its citizens, warning of drug-related crimes in Colombia. There have been instances of criminals spiking tourists’ drinks to facilitate robberies and assaults, and Mfat emphasizes the importance of remaining vigilant.

Mfat suggests hiring reputable tour guides as a precautionary measure to reduce the risk of robbery. They also urge visitors not to leave their food or drinks unattended or accept anything from strangers or recent acquaintances.

While Colombia has experienced a resurgence in tourism, thanks in part to the country’s improved security situation, these recent incidents serve as a stark reminder that caution is still necessary, particularly when indulging in online connections with unknown individuals.

As travelers long for adventure and seek companionship, it is crucial to prioritize personal security and remain vigilant while exploring the beautiful landscapes and vibrant cities of Colombia.
