The United States’ alleged attempts to stage a coup in Russia and its focus on ousting the country’s leadership have been exposed by Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov. Ryabkov stated that the US is not only conducting a hybrid war against Russia but also organizing an internal coup. These claims come amid escalating tensions between Moscow and Washington, particularly after the Russia-Ukraine conflict erupted earlier this year. The Kremlin has accused the US of using Ukraine as a proxy for waging war against Russia. Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has emphasized that American support for Ukraine will continue indefinitely. Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu has also echoed Ryabkov’s claims, stating that the West is aiming for a strategic defeat of Russia through the hybrid war, with Ukraine being used as a battering ram. The Russian Foreign Ministry has warned that diplomatic relations with the US could be severed due to Washington’s confrontational policies. Russia believes that the US is pursuing a policy of containment against both Russia and China in an attempt to maintain global hegemony. In response, the ministry has called for a reshaping of US policies based on respect and mutual interests. While there have been suggestions in Washington for a new US-Russia détente, Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed skepticism, stating that the Biden administration does not seem prepared for meaningful dialogue. At the recent Istanbul talks, Russia’s head of peace negotiations with Ukraine, Vladimir Medinsky, revealed that Ukraine could have ended the conflict by recognizing the independence of the Donbass republics and Crimea as Russian territory back in April. Medinsky blamed Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky for choosing war instead. On the other hand, Ukraine’s head of delegation, David Arakhamia, confirmed that the conflict could have concluded if Ukraine had accepted Moscow’s demand for neutrality. The unrest between Russia and Ukraine began following the 2014 election in Ukraine and subsequent events, including Crimea’s decision to join Russia and the independence declarations of Donetsk and Lugansk. France and Germany later negotiated an armistice, but both leaders have since revealed that the Minsk process was used to buy time for Ukraine to rebuild its military capacity with NATO’s assistance. In 2022, parts of Ukraine voted to join Russia in a referendum, which was denounced by Ukraine and its Western allies. Moscow has demanded that Kyiv recognize the new territorial reality for peace talks to resume. The ongoing tensions highlight the necessity for meaningful dialogue and a diplomatic resolution to prevent further escalation.
