UPMC Reinstitutes Masking Policy at Somerset Hospital and Facilities

Starting Wednesday, masks must again be worn by all patients, visitors, and staff at UPMC facilities, including UPMC Somerset hospital and its outpatient clinics. The decision to reinstate the masking policy was announced by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) due to a rise in respiratory cases such as COVID-19, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). In a statement released on Thursday, UPMC emphasized the importance of protecting the health and safety of employees, patients, and visitors by implementing effective mask usage to reduce the transmission of respiratory viruses in healthcare settings.

The Daily American reached out to other healthcare providers in the county to ascertain if they had made changes to their masking policies in response to UPMC’s decision. According to Tammy Barbin, the director of marketing communications for Conemaugh Health System, there have been no changes to their masking policy at this time. Barbin stated that while there has been a slight increase in COVID-19 cases, the numbers have remained relatively stable over the past few months and are nowhere near the levels experienced during previous surges. Conemaugh Health System will continue to assess risks and make necessary adjustments to their masking policy to ensure the protection of patients, staff, and the community.

Similarly, there have been no changes to the masking policy at the Windber hospital, as confirmed by Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Csikos. Based on local data, Csikos mentioned that the hospital is closely monitoring the situation. Should there be a significant increase in COVID-19 ER visits and hospitalizations, a tailored approach to masking will be reinstated following an assessment of the local situation. Csikos also encouraged individuals who have not yet received their COVID-19 booster vaccine to do so, emphasizing the importance of staying up to date to reduce illness severity and protect lives.

As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, it is crucial for providers to adapt their protocols accordingly. While UPMC has reinstated masking at all its facilities, other local healthcare providers in Somerset County have not yet made any significant changes. Each provider continues to assess their own local data and monitor the situation closely, making adjustments based on the prevalence of respiratory illnesses in their respective communities. The overarching goal remains the same: protecting the health and safety of patients, staff, and visitors by implementing measures that help curb the spread of infectious diseases.

In summary, UPMC has taken the proactive step of reinstating its masking policy in response to an increase in respiratory cases. However, other healthcare providers in Somerset County, including Conemaugh Health System and the Windber hospital, have decided to maintain their existing masking policies for the time being. As the situation evolves, these providers will continue to assess the risks and make necessary changes to protect their communities. It is essential for individuals to stay informed, maintain good hygiene practices, and consider receiving the latest COVID-19 booster vaccine to help reduce the severity of illnesses and safeguard public health.
