UP Police Solves 1,355 Crimes Using 7.18 Lakh CCTV Cameras

Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Police has successfully solved 1,355 crime incidents with the help of approximately 7.18 lakh CCTV cameras installed across the state under operation ‘Trinetra’ (third eye), according to UP Police Director General (DGP) Vijaya Kumar. The initiative, which began on July 10, aims to install around 10 lakh CCTV cameras in order to strengthen video surveillance and combat crimes.

During a press conference, DGP Vijaya Kumar revealed that the crimes solved with the assistance of CCTV cameras included 208 incidents of dacoity and loot, 82 murders, 46 kidnappings, 32 rapes and sexual assaults, 574 thefts and house thefts, and 412 other crime incidents.

Moreover, the state police, under operation ‘Conviction’ launched on July 1, has convicted and sentenced 16,302 accused in 12,015 cases. Among the sentences handed down, 16 individuals were given the death penalty, 1,569 were sentenced to life imprisonment or imprisonment exceeding 20 years. Additionally, 983 convicts received imprisonment of 10 to 19 years, 1,553 were sentenced to imprisonment between 5 to 9 years, and 11,897 received punishments under five years’ imprisonment.

In a bid to curb bovine smuggling and slaughtering, a special campaign was launched for 15 days between October 27 and November 10. As a result, 70 percent of the accused in such cases were verified, and 509 active accused were arrested or surrendered to the courts.

The UP Police has also taken strong measures against criminal activities. The Goonda Act has been invoked against 2,573 accused, the Gangster Act has been imposed on 1,506 accused, and the National Security Act has been slapped on four individuals. The police have opened history sheets for approximately 1,114 accused, while the remaining 30 percent are currently undergoing verification. Consequently, the campaign has been extended for an additional 10 days.

Overall, the extensive use of CCTV cameras has not only helped in solving crimes but has also resulted in successful convictions. The UP Police’s efforts to enhance video surveillance through a substantial increase in the number of CCTV cameras is expected to further strengthen security measures and deter criminal activities in the state.
