UP Govt Approves Two Thermal Power Projects Worth Rs 18,000 Crore in Sonbhadra’s Obra

The Uttar Pradesh government has given its approval for the development of two thermal power projects, known as the ‘Obra D’ plants, in Sonbhadra’s Obra. The projects, estimated to cost Rs 18,000 crore, aim to provide cheaper electricity to the people of the state.

The approval for the ‘Obra D’ thermal power plants was granted during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanah. The government will undertake these projects in a 50:50 partnership with the central government-owned power generator NTPC. The implementation of the projects will be funded by providing 30% equity, while the remaining 70% will be arranged through financial institutions.

What sets these thermal power plants apart is that they will be the first ultra super critical units in the state. With state-of-the-art technology and high efficiency, these plants will consume less coal, thereby reducing the cost of power generation. As a result, electricity rates in Uttar Pradesh are expected to drop significantly.

According to Urban Development and Energy Minister A K Sharma, the first unit of the ‘Obra D’ thermal power plants is expected to be ready in approximately 50 months. The projects will be built on around 500 acres of land, with provisions for additional land if required.

The current capacity for thermal power generation in Uttar Pradesh stands at 7,000 MW. These two new plants will contribute nearly 25% of the existing capacity. The aim is for Obra to become an energy hub not only for the state but for the entire country.

The use of advanced technologies in the new plants will result in lower coal consumption and reduced transportation costs due to their close proximity to NCL coal mines. Consumers can look forward to purchasing electricity at a cheaper rate of Rs. 4.79 per unit, compared to the current rate of Rs. 5.50 per unit. This means a savings of Re 1 per unit for consumers.

By approving these thermal power projects, the Uttar Pradesh government is taking significant steps towards providing affordable and accessible electricity to its residents. The development of the ‘Obra D’ plants will not only enhance the state’s thermal power capacity but also contribute to the overall energy requirements of the country. With state-of-the-art technology and efficient operations, these projects will have a positive impact on power generation and electricity rates, benefiting consumers and promoting economic growth in the region.

In conclusion, the approval of the two thermal power projects in Sonbhadra’s Obra, with an estimated cost of Rs 18,000 crore, marks a significant milestone in Uttar Pradesh’s efforts to meet its power demands. The ‘Obra D’ plants will introduce ultra super critical units to the state, enabling efficient power generation and lower electricity rates. By partnering with NTPC and leveraging advanced technologies, the state government is working towards providing affordable and sustainable energy solutions for its residents.
