Unscrupulous Hackers Exploit Jamaica’s Online Immigration System, Charging Visitors for Access

Thousands of unsuspecting visitors to Jamaica are falling victim to a fraudulent scheme targeting the country’s new online immigration system. Hackers have exploited the Passport Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) system, charging individuals $35 to access the required C5 form for entry into the country. Since September 1, all travelers, including both residents and visitors, are required to complete the immigration form online.

During a recent tour of the Norman Manley International Airport, Minister of National Security Dr. Horace Chang acknowledged that hackers had hacked into the system as soon as it went live. He urged Jamaicans and visitors to only use the official PICA and Jamaica Customs websites to access the forms, warning that these hackers could misuse any personal information provided.

The fraudulent websites charging fees for completing the online immigration form have caused confusion among travelers who mistakenly believe that Jamaica itself is charging for entry. Minister Chang emphasized that the service is entirely free and aims to improve service quality and efficiency, not generate revenue. The fees charged by these fraudulent websites range from $5 to $30.

Reports indicate that this fraudulent activity has been ongoing even before September 1, with some unsuspecting travelers paying a Canadian travel agent CAD$50 each to access the online form. A search conducted by The Gleaner newspaper revealed five different websites charging fees for completing the form, including the Spanish-based company Online Travel Evisa Society Limited, which falsely claimed to be involved in an arrangement with the Jamaican government.

The lack of sufficient information about the online immigration system has heightened concerns among Jamaicans. Many believe that more should have been done to inform locals and visitors about the proper channels for accessing the forms. The electronic portal aims to streamline the arrival process at Jamaica’s international airports, offering a seamless entry experience for travelers.

Minister Chang emphasized that once the system is functioning properly, passengers will be able to breeze through the airport as long as they have no contraband. The electronic C5 form is designed to create a smooth and efficient process for both Jamaican citizens returning home and visitors to the country. The tourism sector, one of Jamaica’s major economic drivers, stands to benefit greatly from these improvements.

Going forward, it is crucial for authorities to address the issue of fraudulent websites and enhance public education about the official platforms for accessing the online immigration forms. By doing so, Jamaica can ensure a safe and hassle-free experience for all travelers entering the country.
