Florida Dog Groomer Arrested for Impersonating Veterinarian, Performs Fatal C-Section Surgery
A shocking incident in Florida has resulted in the arrest of an unlicensed dog groomer who posed as a veterinarian and performed a cesarean section on a Chihuahua, leading to the dog’s death. Osvaldo Sanchez, 61, was charged with animal abuse and practicing veterinary medicine without a license, according to the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.
The tragic incident unfolded in May when Sugar, a 6-year-old Chihuahua, experienced complications while giving birth to her puppies. Desperate for help, Sugar’s owners reached out to Sanchez, who had falsely presented himself as a veterinarian. The unsuspecting couple had no idea that Sanchez was not qualified to perform medical procedures on animals.
Sanchez arrived at the couple’s home on May 18 and proceeded to evaluate Sugar’s condition. Without proper training or qualifications, he performed a C-section and spay procedure on the 6-pound dog using his mobile office. Shockingly, he charged the owners $600 for the surgical procedure.
Tragically, the situation took a turn for the worse as Sugar developed an infection after the surgery and became severely ill. She was immediately taken to a licensed veterinary clinic where she stayed for a week in critical condition. However, due to the unprofessionalism and negligence displayed during the surgery, her condition deteriorated rapidly.
On May 25, Sugar was transferred to a 24-hour emergency pet care facility. During an ultrasound examination, it was discovered that the C-section incision had been closed using string or thread instead of the standard suture material. Detectives investigating the incident believe this unusual method of closure contributed to Sugar’s subsequent infection.
Despite the best efforts of the veterinary staff, Sugar’s condition continued to worsen, and she tragically passed away later that night from multiple complications resulting from the botched surgery.
