The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (UAPB) stunned Texas Southern with an epic comeback win in their season finale, overturning a significant halftime deficit to secure the victory. UAPB seemed destined to end the season without a conference win but rallied in the second half to defeat Texas Southern 35-34 at Shell Energy Stadium.

At halftime, Texas Southern had established a commanding 31-7 lead. However, UAPB showcased their resilience and determination. Quarterback Mekhi Hagens orchestrated the comeback, completing a crucial pass to Kenji Lewis for a touchdown in the third quarter. In the fourth, Hagens scored on a 4-yard run and converted a 2-point try himself.

As the game progressed, UAPB’s defense stepped up and made game-changing plays. Cameron Roetherford blocked a punt, allowing Khalil Arnold to scoop it up and pitch it to Elijah Jenkins for a touchdown. This sequence closed the gap to 34-28, fueling UAPB’s momentum.

The Golden Lions’ defense continued to shine, forcing a fumble from Texas Southern’s LaDarius Owens. UAPB recovered the fumble deep in Tiger territory, setting the stage for an exhilarating finish. With just 1:46 left on the clock, Hagens fought through a big hit to score a crucial touchdown, leveling the game. Dean Sarris kicked the game-winning extra point, sealing the remarkable comeback.

The victory marked UAPB’s first conference win under head coach Alonzo Hampton and prevented them from finishing the season without a SWAC win for the first time in over two decades. UAPB running back Michael Jamerson contributed 113 rushing yards to the team’s success, while Hagens showcased his dual-threat abilities with 49 yards rushing and two touchdowns, in addition to 193 passing yards and a passing touchdown.

Texas Southern’s Owens played a significant role in his team’s first-half dominance, scoring three touchdowns in quick succession. Despite his efforts, UAPB managed to contain him in the second half and mounted their comeback.

At halftime, Texas Southern had outgained UAPB 270-109 in terms of yardage. However, UAPB’s exceptional second-half performance resulted in them finishing the game with an overall yardage advantage of 391-337. This comeback victory provided the Golden Lions with a much-needed boost heading into the offseason.

In conclusion, the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff produced a stunning comeback win against Texas Southern, overcoming a significant halftime deficit to secure their first conference victory of the season. The Golden Lions’ determination and resilience were on full display as they outscored Texas Southern 28-3 in the second half. This victory prevented UAPB from finishing the season without a conference win and offers a positive outlook for their future endeavors.
