Union Corners on Madison’s East Side is set to host a grand opening celebration to mark the completion of a 10-year redevelopment project. The event will take place on Wednesday, July 12th at 4 p.m. and will be hosted by Gorman & Company, the firm behind the project.
Union Corners is a mixed-use, mixed-income community consisting of 252 units, located at the intersections of E. Washington Ave., Winnebago St., and Milwaukee St. on Madison’s east side. The development sits on a 13-acre parcel of formerly vacant land and has been a multi-phased project.
Gary Gorman, founder and chairman of the board of directors of Gorman & Company, expressed his pride in the community created at Union Corners, stating that it will be a permanent asset to the adjacent neighborhoods and the entire City of Madison for generations to come.
The grand opening celebration will be open to the public and will feature a menu sampling from the new restaurant, Touch of Ukraine, located within the development’s Carbon building. Attendees will also be treated to entertainment by Ladies Must Swing, as well as Quick Chef food cart and Momma Meg’s Ice Cream Truck. Additionally, the event will include the unveiling of permanent art installations honoring the Union soldiers, the historic Union House Tavern, and the French Battery and Carbon Company, all of which played a significant role in the area’s history.
This site on Madison’s East Side holds historical significance as a former Civil War Union soldier encampment and the home of Schulkamp’s Corner Saloon, which was also known as Union House Tavern, a name given to it by the soldiers who frequented the establishment.
