A BJP office in Siliguri’s Dabgram, West Bengal was set on fire by unidentified miscreants late on Thursday night. Thankfully, no injuries were reported. The violence has been escalating in the region ahead of the Panchayat elections scheduled for July 8. Speaking to reporters, West Bengal Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari said that the violence is not going to stop until Mamata Banerjee is in power and urged people not to vote for the Trinamool Congress and its Chief. This violent incident comes after the Calcutta High Court ordered a CBI probe into the violence surrounding the nomination filing for West Bengal’s panchayat polls.
This move came after the Left Front approached the court, alleging that their candidates’ names were not included on the list of State Election Commission’s website. The court has given the CBI until July 7 to submit its report. The opposition has accused the Trinamool Congress activists of violence against their candidates and supporters, while the ruling party has held the opposition responsible for the clashes during the nomination filing period. Bengal has witnessed a series of clashes in recent days.
Elections will be held for approximately 75,000 seats in the three-tier Panchayati Raj system on July 8. Justice Sinha has noted that the clashes before the polls in the state and said that the widespread violence happening during the election process should not be taking place. The high court has also heard allegations of document tampering that enabled two candidates in two Uluberia blocks to bypass the scrutiny process. It has been reported that the BDO of the area refused to accept the complaint on the matter. The court has therefore asked the CBI to investigate the issue, saying it would be inappropriate to entrust the duty to the state.
