Getting Driving Cards for Undocumented Residents a Priority for Indiana Chamber of Commerce

INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana Chamber of Commerce has identified driving cards for undocumented immigrants as a top priority for the coming year. The chamber believes that providing driving cards to the thousands of undocumented immigrants residing in Indiana would have a positive impact on the state’s economy.

According to Kevin Brinegar, the president and CEO of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, the push for driving cards arises from the practical realities of the situation. We have undocumented individuals living here, working here, that’s the reality, and right now, they can’t get insurance, Brinegar stated. Granting driving cards would allow these individuals to obtain insurance, ensuring a safer driving experience for all residents.

Beyond safety concerns, Brinegar believes that driving cards would also benefit the state’s economy. You have folks that, if they go through driver’s education, better prepared and understand how to operate a car safely, it’ll reduce some disruption in our economy, he explained.

The inability to acquire driver’s licenses has had significant consequences for undocumented immigrants. It has created a climate of fear for individuals like Mari Luna, who shared her family’s experiences. Luna’s father was incarcerated for ten months due to driving without a license in Hamilton County, and now, due to a backlog, her DACA has expired.

Recognizing the influence of the Indiana Chamber of Commerce, Luna expressed hope in their ability to bring about change. This is definitely going to be a game changer because a lot of politicians, decision-makers, and individuals that just have a stake in business in Indiana look up to the Chamber of Commerce in kind of setting the pathways, she said.

Despite the setback of Senate Bill 248 not advancing out of the appropriations committee during this legislative session, State Representative Earl Harris remains committed to pushing for change. While progress may be slow, Harris believes that building upon the momentum gained in this session will pave the way for success in the future.

The Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s prioritization of driving cards for undocumented residents reflects a recognition of the practical concerns and economic benefits associated with the issue. By addressing the challenges faced by undocumented immigrants in obtaining driver’s licenses, both safety and economic stability can be promoted in the state of Indiana.

As the discussion surrounding this issue continues, it remains to be seen how the Indiana Chamber of Commerce’s efforts will shape future policy decisions. Promoting inclusivity and addressing the needs of all residents, regardless of their immigration status, is a key element in creating a thriving and prosperous community.
