UNC-Chapel Hill’s Tech Checklist: Connect, Configure, and Dive into the Semester Hassle-Free

As a new semester begins at UNC-Chapel Hill, students are gearing up to ensure a smooth start. One essential aspect of this process is getting your technology up and running before classes commence. To save yourself from any unnecessary headaches, it is crucial to connect, configure, and dive into the semester hassle-free.

The UNC-Chapel Hill IT department has compiled a helpful checklist to guide students through the necessary steps. From connecting to Wi-Fi to configuring essential tools, here’s what you need to know:

Connect to eduroam

Establishing a reliable internet connection is one of the first things you should do when you have new tech or visit a new location. At UNC-Chapel Hill, eduroam is the primary wireless network. Whether you have a new device or are new to Carolina, follow these simple steps to get connected.

Register or reactivate 2-Step Verification

To ensure campus security, UNC-Chapel Hill employs two 2-Step Verification tools — Duo Security and Microsoft. If you’re new to campus, setting up 2-Step Verification is a breeze. However, if you’re returning with a new smartphone, you’ll need to reactivate your account. Without reactivation, push notifications will still go to your old device. Reactivating is usually as simple as tapping restore, but refer to the comprehensive guides for reactivating Duo and Microsoft for further assistance.

Register for Carolina Key

Carolina Key allows you to skip the hassle of typing your password each time you log in to various web-based UNC-Chapel Hill systems, including ConnectCarolina, Canvas, and Time Information Management. By registering your device, such as your smartphone or laptop, with Carolina Key, you can enjoy fast and secure logins.

Get print-ready

Printing at UNC-Chapel Hill now goes by the name of Carolina Print Hub. Managed by ITS Educational Technologies, the service offers several perks, including 70 print stations across campus, mobile printing, touchless release, and print allotments for students. To prepare your new tech for printing, visit Carolina Print Hub to find a convenient location and install printing software on your laptop or the touchless printing app on your smartphone.

Install apps

Despite the prevalence of cloud-based services, certain software applications are still essential. Start by installing Microsoft apps on your new device. Consider downloading Outlook and Teams from your app store for your phone. For laptop software, check out ITS Software Distribution, which provides various tools for work and play, including Adobe Creative Cloud and SAS. Students and instructional staff can even request a free Adobe Creative Cloud license directly from Software Distribution. Additionally, don’t forget to download CarolinaGO, an all-in-one app that offers everything from dining menus to bus tracking to maps. Find it on Google Play or the App Store. Lastly, take advantage of LinkedIn Learning, which is free for all Carolina students, faculty, and staff.

By following this comprehensive tech checklist, UNC-Chapel Hill students can avoid unnecessary stress and ensure a hassle-free start to the new semester. With a fully connected and configured tech arsenal, students can dive straight into their academic journey. Take advantage of the resources provided by the UNC-Chapel Hill IT department and make the most of your technology for a successful semester. Good luck!
