The United Nations human rights chief, Volker Türk, has called on Canada to strengthen its commitment to human rights in order to increase its chances of joining the UN Human Rights Council. Türk emphasized the need for Canada to follow up on the pledges it makes at home and abroad, stating that this would demonstrate Canada’s dedication to human rights. He suggested that Canada should consider conducting its own annual or biannual assessments to assess its progress, rather than relying solely on the four-year review process. During his visit to Ottawa, Türk discussed various human rights issues, including Canada’s approach to handling human rights within its borders and addressing international concerns. Canada is campaigning to join the UN Human Rights Council for the term spanning from 2028 to 2030. Türk commended Canada for its efforts to address human rights issues, particularly in relation to Indigenous Peoples and gender equality. However, he stressed the importance of implementing the recommendations that arise from these efforts. Türk also urged Canada to recognize housing affordability as a human rights issue, especially in light of the rise in homelessness exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall, Türk praised Canada’s dedication to human rights but urged the country to take further steps to fulfill its commitments.
