UN Diplomat Engages in Talks to Revive Cyprus Peace Discussions

UN Assistant Secretary-General for Europe, Central Asia, and the Americas, Miroslav Jenča, has arrived in Nicosia as part of his diplomatic engagements to revive peace discussions in Cyprus. His visit includes separate meetings with President Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.

President Christodoulides emphasized the significance of Jenča’s visit, stating that it is crucial for him to be in Cyprus and conduct these meetings. Jenča represents the UN Secretary-General and his visit aims to explore the possibilities of resuming talks on the Cyprus issue.

Jenča’s presence in Cyprus is considered important as it underscores the Secretary-General’s commitment to finding a resolution. President Christodoulides highlighted that the most important aspect of this visit is to achieve tangible results.

Confirming Jenča’s visit, Florencia Soto Niño, Associate Spokesperson for the Secretary-General, stated that discussions will mainly focus on the future of the Cyprus issue and recent developments on the ground, including the assault against peacekeepers in Pyla. Jenča will be in Cyprus from August 27 to 29 and will also meet with UN peacekeepers stationed in the buffer zone in Pyla.

The attack on August 18, 2023, involved Turkish Cypriot personnel physically assaulting international peacekeepers who were trying to prevent unauthorized construction encroaching upon the UN-controlled buffer zone. The incident was unanimously condemned by the members of the UN Security Council on August 22, 2023.

Jenča’s talks in Cyprus aim to address the rising tensions and explore potential solutions for the Cyprus issue. The diplomatic engagements play a crucial role in creating a conducive environment for the resumption of peace discussions.

The UN’s involvement in Cyprus signifies the international community’s commitment to finding a lasting solution to the long-standing conflict. Efforts to address recent developments, including the assault on peacekeepers, demonstrate the importance of restoring stability and promoting dialogue.

As Jenča’s visit concludes on August 29, all parties hope that these talks will pave the way for renewed negotiations and ultimately bring about a peaceful resolution to the Cyprus issue. The international community continues to support the efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace and stability in Cyprus.
