United Nations Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has been given a deadline of 30 days by the UN Security Council to present various options to combat the growing threat of armed gangs in Haiti. The resolution, adopted unanimously on Friday, emphasizes the need for a comprehensive approach to address the security situation in the country.

One of the proposed options is the deployment of a possible UN peacekeeping force, alongside a non-UN multinational force. This would involve additional training for the Haitian National Police and support to combat illegal arms trafficking, which is a major concern in the impoverished nation.

Additionally, the resolution authorizes the deployment of up to 70 UN police and corrections advisers to enhance support and training for Haiti’s understaffed and underfunded national police force. It also calls on countries, especially those in the Caribbean region, to respond to appeals from Haiti’s Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, and Secretary-General Guterres for the deployment of an international specialized force.

Prime Minister Henry urgently requested the immediate deployment of a specialized armed force last October to counter the growing influence of armed gangs. However, despite more than eight months passing, no country has come forward to lead such a force.

During his recent visit to Haiti, Secretary-General Guterres emphasized the need for a robust international force to help the Haitian National Police dismantle the gangs and restore order.

The resolution aims to improve the security situation in the country, which has been plagued by gang violence and a deteriorating socio-economic situation. The presence of armed gangs has led to increased insecurity, hindering development and threatening the lives of ordinary citizens.

Implementing the proposed options would not only strengthen the capabilities of the Haitian National Police but also address the underlying issues contributing to the rise of armed gangs. It would require a coordinated international effort to tackle illegal arms trafficking and provide long-term stability to the country.

Haiti’s government continues to call for assistance from the international community to tackle this pressing issue, which requires immediate attention and action. Secretary-General Guterres’ report will play a crucial role by providing a range of options to combat armed gangs and restore peace and security in Haiti.

The international community must recognize the urgency of the situation and step up to support Haiti in its efforts to combat armed gangs. The inclusion of a robust peacekeeping force and a multinational approach is crucial to effectively address the security challenges faced by the nation.

The next 30 days will be critical in formulating a comprehensive plan to combat armed gangs in Haiti. The implementation of the proposed options will pave the way for a safer and more stable future for the Haitian people. It is essential that the international community stands united in their support for Haiti, ensuring that these options are effectively implemented to bring an end to the violent reign of armed gangs in the country.
