Ukrainian Refugee Children Benefit from New Library in Market Harborough Church

A heartwarming initiative in Market Harborough, a town in England, has seen the establishment of a children’s library dedicated to Ukrainian refugee children who have fled their war-torn country. Located at the town’s Methodist church on Northampton Road, the library now houses over 100 Ukrainian children’s books that have been sent over from Ukraine to provide solace and education to young minds.

The library idea was conceived by a resourceful 14-year-old Ukrainian girl who, along with her family, found refuge in the town after being forced to flee their homes due to the Russian invasion. Approximately 40 refugee families are being generously hosted in Market Harborough by local residents, showcasing the spirit of compassion and kindness.

To bring this project to life, the books were transported all the way from the Dnipro City Library in eastern Ukraine. The entire collection was generously donated by the Dnipro City Council, demonstrating their commitment to supporting refugees. However, the cost of shipping posed a challenge until the members of Harborough District Council stepped in to offer their support.

Peter James, a Liberal Democrat councillor, spoke about the council’s decision to pitch in financially, saying, I spoke to some of my colleagues across the coalition on the council and we dug into our pockets and raised the money through a collection. We needed around £140.

After making its journey via Poland, the shipment of books arrived in Market Harborough a couple of weeks ago. Parents of the refugee children have been visiting the library and taking the books home to aid in teaching their children their mother tongue. This endeavor ensures that these young individuals do not fall behind academically while they are away from their home country.

The library project has been met with great enthusiasm, and its positive impact is evident. Councillor Peter James expressed his joy, stating, It’s going really well, and it has been a delight to see. This initiative not only provides a safe and stimulating environment for the children but also encourages and strengthens their connection to their Ukrainian heritage.

The creation of this children’s library exemplifies the power of communities coming together to support those in need. By offering a space filled with familiar books and stories, the library provides comfort and a sense of belonging for these young Ukrainian refugees. It also serves as a testament to the compassion and generosity of the people of Market Harborough.

As this project continues to thrive, it showcases the true spirit of humanity and reminds us of the ability to make a positive impact in the lives of others, even during challenging times. Through the library, the young Ukrainian refugees in Market Harborough are given the opportunity to learn, grow, and find solace, ensuring a brighter future for them as they rebuild their lives.
