The upcoming NATO Summit will address the long-term defense needs of Ukraine and seek to establish a common understanding among allies regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. In an interview with Al Arabiya, Kirby emphasized the importance of bolstering NATO’s eastern flank in response to the evolving security situation on the continent. He stated that the United States remains committed to supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts and expects allies to make security commitments to help Ukraine in the long run. Kirby also discussed other geopolitical issues, including Iran’s seizure of a commercial vessel in international waters near the Gulf and the ongoing violence in Sudan and Israel-Palestine.
With regards to Ukraine, Kirby reiterated the United States’ commitment to assisting Ukraine in defending itself. He acknowledged that regardless of how and when the war ends, Ukraine will still share a long border with Russia and have legitimate defense requirements. The specifics of the security commitments will be a topic of discussion at the NATO Summit, with allies expected to formulate a common approach.
Turning to Iran, Kirby condemned the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ attack on maritime shipping, stating that it is not new behavior. He emphasized that the United States will maintain a robust security presence in and around the Gulf and explore additional measures to pressure the Iranian regime.
In the case of Sudan, where multiple ceasefire deals have failed to hold, Kirby revealed that American diplomats are actively working to reach a solution with the warring factions. He stressed the need for the parties involved to honor their commitments and allow humanitarian assistance to reach those in need.
Addressing the recent violence in the West Bank, Kirby stated that the United States maintains routine dialogue with Israel and believes that a two-state solution is still viable. De-escalation of tensions and condemnation of violence from both sides are necessary for progress.
Overall, the NATO Summit will serve as a platform to discuss and strategize long-term defense needs for Ukraine. The United States remains committed to supporting Ukraine in its defense efforts, recognizing the country’s legitimate defense requirements due to its long border with Russia. In addition, the United States will continue to address geopolitical challenges, including Iran’s actions in the Gulf, the ongoing violence in Sudan, and the Israel-Palestine conflict.
