Ukraine Competes in Prem Student Competition in Chengdu

The world’s premier student competition has kicked off in Chengdu, China, with an impressive opening ceremony showcasing traditional Chinese style. Among the 115 countries participating, Ukraine proudly joined the parade of athletes as they showcased their national pride.

Leading the way for Ukraine was Oleh Mamatov, a student from the Ivan Ohienko National University of Kamianets-Podilskyi, who proudly carried the blue and yellow flag into the main stadium of the Universiade. With 61 athletes representing Ukraine, they are ready to compete in 10 sports, including judo, athletics, wushu, volleyball, fencing, badminton, rhythmic and artistic gymnastics, taekwondo, and archery.

Expressing her excitement, Nicole Krasiuk, a rhythmic gymnast from the National University of Physical Education and Sports of Ukraine, shared, I’m very happy to be here, it’s my little dream come true. Of course, we hope for the best result. But the main thing is to tune in to the performance and represent our country with dignity. Follow our performances and be sure to cheer for Ukraine!

Orina Ivanova, representing Ukraine in wushu from the State University of Trade and Economics, described their journey to Chengdu as a long one, including two challenging flights and a bus ride. However, their spirits remained high as they arrived and familiarized themselves with the location for warm-up exercises. Ivanova praised the great food, beautiful city of Chengdu, and their exceptional team.

Anastasia Erokhina, a badminton player from Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute, expressed her awe at the level of organization at the competition, comparing it to the Olympic Games. With it being her first time participating in such a significant event, Erokhina urged everyone to support Team Ukraine.

The Universiade, set to last until August 8th, will feature a total of 269 medal events across 18 sports. The competition officially begins on Saturday, where Ukrainian students will eagerly demonstrate their skills and compete for victory.

In addition to the competitions, a meeting was held in Chengdu among heads of student sports organizations from Ukraine and around the world. Vadym Stetsenko, Chairman of the Committee on Physical Education and Sports of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and Yevhen Imas, President of the Ukrainian Student Sports Union, met with the leadership of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). They discussed the development and support of student sports globally while acknowledging the success of Ukrainian students in international competitions. The Ukrainian delegation expressed gratitude to FISU for its clear stance on banning athletes from aggressor countries like Russia and Belarus from participating in its sanctioned events.

As the excitement builds in Chengdu, Ukrainian athletes are ready to showcase their talent on the international stage and make their country proud. With their eyes on success and medals, they are eager to compete alongside athletes from around the world, fostering camaraderie and celebrating the spirit of sport.
