The UK government plans to invest £300 million ($381 million) in creating special nuclear fuel to power the next generation of reactors, with the aim of reducing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s grip on the global energy market. Currently, high-assay, low-enriched uranium (Haleu) used for advanced reactors is mostly produced in Russia. By domestically producing this fuel, Britain hopes to not only meet its long-term nuclear fuel needs but also offer a viable alternative on the international stage. Additionally, the government will allocate £10 million to develop the infrastructure and expertise required to produce other advanced nuclear fuels. These investments align with the UK’s goal of reaching a net zero economy and providing clean, affordable energy. The move also supports the country’s standing as a global leader in nuclear power innovation.
Energy Security Secretary Claire Coutinho highlighted the significance of this investment in terms of energy security at home and abroad. She stated, We stood up to Putin on oil and gas and financial markets, we won’t let him hold us to ransom on nuclear fuel, emphasizing the government’s commitment to reducing reliance on Russian supplies. Coutinho further noted that the UK would become the first European nation, apart from Russia, to domestically produce advanced nuclear fuel, enhancing its competitive advantages.
The funding will be dedicated to the production of advanced modular reactors, which are smaller and can be manufactured in factories. These reactors have the potential to revolutionize the construction of power stations, making the process faster and more cost-effective. The first plant of this kind is expected to be operational by the early 2030s.
In addition to challenging Russia’s dominance in the global nuclear fuels market, the UK is also aiming to regain its uranium conversion services. Up to £26 million will be invested in reintroducing this capability to the country by the end of the decade. This ambition aligns with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s commitment to global efforts supporting a tripling of civil nuclear power capacity by 2050, to facilitate the transition to cleaner energy sources.
The UK’s investment in domestic nuclear fuel production reinforces its commitment to energy security, sustainability, and reducing reliance on external suppliers. By offering an alternative to Russian-produced nuclear fuel, the UK aims to diversify the global energy market and strengthen its position as a leader in nuclear innovation.
