U.K. civilians should be prepared to engage in a potential land war, urged Gen. Patrick Sanders, the head of the British army, highlighting the significance of citizen armies in conflicts, as evidenced by the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. In a speech on Wednesday, Gen. Sanders emphasized the need for the U.K. to boost its military capabilities in response to emerging threats and adapt to a changing world. While the British army currently consists of approximately 75,000 professional soldiers, with an additional 60,000 service members in the navy and air force, Gen. Sanders argued that these numbers are insufficient. He called for the military to expand to a standing force of around 120,000 soldiers by 2027, affirming that even this would not be enough.

The foundations of the world order are being shaken to their core. We stand at this crossroads – whether to surrender to a sea of troubles, or do everything we can to deter the danger. I believe that, in reality, it’s no choice at all. To guarantee our freedoms, we must be prepared, stated Defense Secretary Grant Shapps in a speech, echoing the concerns expressed by Gen. Sanders. However, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s office swiftly ruled out military conscription in response to these calls.

Amid the increasing threats posed by Russia and other global adversaries, the U.K. finds itself in a critical strategic position. The Defense Secretary emphasized the urgency of repositioning the country and adapting to the changing dynamics of international relations. Old enemies are reanimated. New foes are taking shape. Battle lines are being redrawn. The tanks are literally on Europe’s Ukrainian lawn, warned Shapps.

Although the U.K. government has announced plans to increase military spending from 2% to 2.5% of the gross domestic product, Gen. Sanders stressed that further investment is necessary. He believes the British army’s current size is inadequate for effectively responding to the evolving threats, such as those highlighted by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Sanders emphasized the role of citizen armies in winning conflicts, stating, Ukraine brutally illustrates that regular armies start wars; citizen armies win them.

As the British military faces a demanding global landscape, concerns over the ability to adequately defend the nation have come to the forefront. The recognition of citizen armies’ significance and the need for a larger standing force reflect the gravity of the situation. The world order’s stability is being tested, requiring the U.K. to reassess its preparedness and safeguard its freedoms.

The opinions expressed by Gen. Patrick Sanders and Defense Secretary Grant Shapps underscore the potential threats and challenges that the nation must confront. While the British government aims to boost military spending and adapt to the evolving landscape, the call for citizen preparedness and an expanded military force highlights the growing urgency of the situation.

It remains to be seen how the U.K. will address these concerns and strengthen its defense capabilities in the face of emerging threats. As the world navigates uncertain times, the focus on preserving freedom and ensuring preparedness has never been more critical.
