The U.K. Safety Institute, a AI safety body of the U.K released a toolset designed to strengthen AI safety. The new safety tool is expected to make it easier for industry, research organizations and academia to develop AI evaluations.

Reportedly, the new tool named ‘Inspect’ will be available under an open source license, specifically an MIT License. Inspect aims to assess certain capabilities of AI models. It will also look into AI models’ core knowledge and ability to reason, and generate a score based on the results.

Inspect is made up of data sets, solvers and scorers. Data sets will enable samples for evaluation tests. Solvers will do the work of carrying out the tests. Lastly, scorers have the ability to evaluate the work of solvers and aggregate scores from the tests into metrics. Additionally, Inspect’s built-in components can be augmented through third-party packages written in Python.

Experts suggest that Global AI safety evaluations can be enhanced as the UK AI Safety Institute’s evaluations platform is made available to the global AI community today, paving the way for safe innovation of AI models.

The Safety Institute claimed that Inspect marks the first time that an AI safety testing platform which has been spearheaded by a state-backed body has been released for wider use, as explained in a press release announcing the news. Industry experts suggest that more powerful models are expected to hit the market, making the push for safe and responsible AI development more pressing.

As Chair of the AI Safety Institute, I am proud that we are open sourcing our Inspect platform. Successful collaboration on AI safety testing means having a shared, accessible approach to evaluations, and we hope Inspect can be a building block for AI Safety Institutes, research organisations, and academia, AI Safety Institute Chair Ian Hogarth explained.

As part of the constant drumbeat of UK leadership on AI safety, I have cleared the AI Safety Institute’s testing platform – called Inspect – to be open sourced. This puts UK ingenuity at the heart of the global effort to make AI safe, and cements our position as the world leader in this space, Secretary of State for Science, Innovation, and Technology, Michelle Donelan , concluded.
