UGC Chief defends NCERT against unwarranted attacks by some academicians

The University Grants Commission (UGC) chief, M. Jagadesh Kumar, has defended the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) following criticisms of frequent revisions to school textbooks. A letter to NCERT Director D.P. Saklani calling for the removal of the signatories’ names from textbooks prompted the response. Kumar argued that these revisions are a common occurrence, with the current changes merely temporary. A new set of textbooks are currently in development based on the recently-launched National Curriculum Framework for School Education. However, some academics have expressed concern regarding the removal of history chapters from school textbooks.
