Uganda Airlines has launched its maiden direct flight to Mecca in Saudi Arabia, as it prepares to launch scheduled flights to the Gulf nation later in the year. The national carrier flew 200 Muslim citizens to Mecca for the Hajj pilgrimage on its Airbus A330 aircraft, which has a capacity of 258. The trip takes place annually, and is seen as an obligation for all able-bodied Muslims of financial means. In the past, Ugandan pilgrims have had to connect through other countries to reach their destination, making the journey long and expensive. The airline plans to start its scheduled flights between Uganda and Saudi Arabia by September this year. Currently, Uganda Airlines operates on regional routes, flying to cities such as Nairobi, Juba, and Mogadishu.
