UFC Fighter Colby Covington Criticizes USA Boxing for Allowing Men to Compete Against Women
Renowned UFC fighter Colby Covington has publicly condemned the decision made by the boxing authority in the United States to permit transgender individuals who have undergone gender reassignment surgery to compete against women. USA Boxing recently updated its rules, which took effect on Monday, to allow transgender athletes to participate in women’s boxing as long as they fulfill specific conditions. These conditions include having completed gender reassignment surgery, maintaining testosterone levels within certain limits for a consecutive four-year period, and providing documentation of hormone levels. Failure to comply with these requirements can result in a 12-month suspension.
In an interview with Ingraham Angle guest host Pete Hegseth, Covington expressed his strong disagreement with the decision, stating, Biological men shouldn’t be allowed to compete in women’s sports. Doesn’t matter what their pronouns are, they are still biological men. When they dig up their bones in 200 years, their bones won’t leave pronouns, they’re just gonna leave XX and XY chromosomes. Unfortunately, boxing is a sport that could potentially have fatal consequences, so to let women go against men is completely irresponsible, unethical, and dangerous.
Covington, who holds an impressive 17-4-0 record in UFC, further criticized the decision, considering it a mere publicity stunt. He urged those in favor of allowing men to compete against women in sport to seek professional help immediately. Covington’s concerns echo those of many others who believe that this decision undermines fair competition and puts female athletes at a disadvantage.
The contentious issue of biological males who identify as transgender competing in women’s sports gained significant attention in the United States recently after Lia Thomas, a University of Pennsylvania swimmer, participated in the 2022 NCAA championships. Thomas, who had previously competed in men’s swimming and was ranked at #462, achieved remarkable success in the women’s division, winning the 500-yard women’s final while performing well in other events.
