Udupi Urges Use of Green Fire Crackers for a Sustainable Diwali

The Udupi district of Karnataka has called upon its residents to embrace green firecrackers for a sustainable and eco-friendly Diwali celebration. The Deputy Commissioner of Udupi, K. Vidyakumari, issued a statement on Tuesday urging people to use firecrackers with a green logo and QR code, as mandated by a Supreme Court order. In an effort to protect the environment, only green firecrackers will be permitted for use between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. during the festival, which runs from November 12 to 15.

To ensure compliance, the district administration will only allow the sale of green firecrackers. Furthermore, Deputy Commissioner Vidyakumari emphasized the importance of celebrating the festival responsibly and minimizing the disturbance caused to children, senior citizens, animals, and birds. Firecrackers should not be burst near hospitals, educational institutions, or their premises.

In order to enforce these regulations, tahsildars and officials of local bodies have been directed to inspect the stocks of firecracker dealers and traders. Any non-green firecrackers found in their possession will be seized, and legal action will be taken against the responsible parties. Temporary stalls selling crackers must adhere to the guidelines outlined in their licensing agreements and take all necessary safety precautions.

Deputy Commissioner Vidyakumari also encouraged officials to organize awareness programs that educate the public on celebrating Diwali in an environmentally friendly manner. Handouts with relevant information will be distributed at bus stands, railway stations, and shopping malls to expand awareness.

To prevent the transportation of banned firecrackers into the district from other states, the Commercial Taxes Department has been instructed to maintain vigilance at checkposts. The local bodies have been tasked with implementing measures for the proper cleaning and scientific disposal of waste generated during the festival.

Meanwhile, shops in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada have commenced the sale of various types of lanterns and traditional earthen diyas for Deepavali, adding to the festive spirit.

By encouraging the use of green firecrackers and implementing regulations to ensure compliance, Udupi aims to foster a more sustainable and environmentally conscious Diwali celebration. With a focus on protecting the well-being of its residents and the preservation of the environment, this initiative sets a positive example for other regions to follow.
