The U.S. Space Force has temporarily halted the use of web-based generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools due to concerns over data security, according to a memo seen by Reuters. The memo, dated September 29, states that personnel are prohibited from using such AI tools including large-language models on government computers until they receive formal approval from the force’s Chief Technology and Innovation Office. The temporary ban is a result of the potential risks associated with data aggregation.

Generative AI, powered by large language models, has seen significant growth in the past year, enabling the creation of products like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which can generate text, images, and videos based on a simple prompt. Lisa Costa, Space Force’s chief technology and innovation officer, acknowledged in the memo that this technology has the potential to revolutionize their workforce and enhance efficiency.

To protect the data of the service and the Guardians, the U.S. Air Force has confirmed the temporary ban. The Air Force spokesperson, Tanya Downsworth, stated that the pause in the use of generative AI and large language models within the U.S. Space Force is temporary, and they are currently evaluating the best way to integrate these capabilities into the roles and mission of the force.

The memo also reveals that a generative AI task force has been formed by the Chief Technology and Innovation Office in collaboration with other Pentagon offices. Their objective is to explore the responsible and strategic implementation of generative AI technology. Costa mentioned that further guidance on the use of generative AI within the Space Force will be released in the coming month.

This temporary pause on the use of AI tools highlights the importance of data security and the need for a careful approach when adopting emerging technologies. As the U.S. Space Force navigates this issue, there is an opportunity to evaluate and establish frameworks that ensure the responsible and effective use of generative AI. With the potential to revolutionize workforce operations, the integration of such technologies should be proceeded with a measured and cautious approach.
