Two individuals have been successfully apprehended by the Delhi Police Special Cell in connection with the CoWin portal data leak case. The CoWin portal, the official platform for Covid-19 vaccination registration and certification, was allegedly subjected to unauthorised sharing of sensitive vaccination data on the encrypted messaging app, Telegram. The adult man, believed to be in his late twenties, is suspected of being involved in the illegal sharing of confidential information of registered users. The accused person’s mother, who works as a health worker in Bihar, also adds an intriguing twist to the case as authorities investigate whether her profession provided any insider knowledge to her son. Earlier this month, the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare labelled the data breach of Covid-19 vaccine beneficiaries as mischievous in nature and stated that the CoWin portal is completely safe with adequate safeguards for data privacy. As a result, the Ministry launched an internal exercise to review the existing security measures of CoWIN.
