Bobby Rivers, Pioneering Film Critic and Food Network Host, Dies at 70

Bobby Rivers, an acclaimed television host, radio personality, and actor, has passed away at the age of 70. The news of his death was announced by Milwaukee’s WISN 12 news station, where Rivers made history as the city’s first Black film critic on television in 1979. As a Marquette University graduate, he also contributed segments for the nationally syndicated PM Magazine, helping Milwaukee break free from stereotypes.

Rivers’ sister, Betsy Rivers, confirmed his death on Facebook and expressed relief that he was no longer in pain. Following the news of his passing, tributes from industry peers poured in, highlighting his groundbreaking contributions to the entertainment world.

Whoopi Goldberg, co-host of The View, took to Instagram to pay homage to the pioneering host. She shared a heartwarming photo of herself with Rivers and wrote, All hail this pioneer Bobby Rivers… He brought SO much to the table. R I P Bobby.

Katie Couric, former co-host of Today, also expressed her sadness over his passing. She described Rivers as a wonderfully warm, funny, and smart individual in a tribute on X.

Actor Mario Cantone, known for his role in Sex and the City, shared a black-and-white throwback photo of Rivers on X, accompanied by words of remembrance. Cantone praised Rivers as a supportive, intelligent, insightful man who will be deeply missed.

Even Turner Classic Movies acknowledged Rivers’ impact. They honored his memory on X, recognizing his enthusiasm and knowledge of classic films, which he shared with the #TCMParty community and through his blog.

Local Fox 6 reporter Gino Salomone, who shares Milwaukee roots with Rivers, offered a special tribute. Salomone praised Rivers’ razor-sharp wit and ability to bring fresh questions to celebrities. He also mentioned that Rivers was one of the first African Americans to host his own show on VH1.

In addition to his contributions to film critique, Rivers had also been interviewed earlier this year by the Wisconsin LGBTQ History Project, which expressed gratitude for his groundbreaking work and his dedication to fostering visibility for all.

The entertainment industry has lost a true trailblazer in the passing of Bobby Rivers. As tributes from fellow hosts, actors, and film enthusiasts pour in, it is clear that his impact and infectious passion for his craft will be remembered for years to come.
