Troops Neutralize 28 Terrorists, Rescue 82 Hostages, and Seize Stolen Crude worth N876m: Defence HQ
In a significant development in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has announced that troops deployed for internal security operations have achieved remarkable success. According to Major General Edward Buba, the Director of Defence Media Operations, the troops have neutralized 28 terrorists, rescued 82 hostages, and seized stolen crude oil worth N876 million.
During the period, the troops carried out targeted operations against various criminal elements, resulting in the arrest of 114 terrorists, collaborators, suspected oil thieves, and kidnappers. Additionally, they brought down 36 dugout pits, 62 wooden boats, 73 storage tanks, one vehicle, and 75 cooking ovens utilized by crude oil thieves.
These operations send a clear message to groups posing a threat to the safety of citizens and security forces. The Armed Forces possess both the power and determination to combat those who wish to cause harm. Major General Buba highlighted the unwavering commitment of the armed forces to protect the nation, even if it means putting themselves in harm’s way.
In the week leading to August 17, 2023, the troops achieved significant victories in their efforts. They neutralized 28 terrorists, arrested 92 terrorists and six gunrunners, apprehended three kidnappers and six collaborators, and brought down seven individuals involved in oil theft. Moreover, as a result of their operations, 82 kidnapped hostages were successfully rescued, and an impressive arsenal of weapons and ammunition was recovered.
The recovered arms cache encompassed 22 AK47 rifles, one PKT gun, six pump-action guns, four dane guns, one fabricated rifle, one galileo ace rifle, one RGP bomb, one RPG tube, 44 hand grenades, 322 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, 63 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, 12 rounds of 5.6mm ammunition, and 33 AK47 magazines. In addition, the troops seized various other items including 14 motorcycles, 16 mobile phones, three motorola radios, one boafeng radio, two motorcycle tires, five touch lights, two solar panels, 104 livestock, and N2,896,400.00 in cash.
In the Niger Delta area, the troops discovered and demolished 36 dugout pits, 62 wooden boats, 73 storage tanks, one vehicle, and 75 cooking ovens utilized by crude oil thieves. The operations also led to the recovery of four pumping machines, five outboard engines, and the dismantling of 33 illegal oil refining sites.
Furthermore, the troops seized 1,166,900 liters of stolen crude oil, 1,491,250 liters of illegally refined AGO (Automotive Gas Oil), 54,750 liters of DPK (Dual Purpose Kerosene), and 800 liters of PMS (Premium Motor Spirit) from economic saboteurs.
